River Bend is Our Home
Al Kish, Jr.

After visiting potential retirement home sites along the Northeastern Coast,  my wife Agnes and I had our home built in  River Bend, North Carolina in 1987 located on the banks of the beautiful Trent River.  It was a beautiful residential town with a population of less than 3000 and a limited amount of commercial business.  All the homes were meticulously cared for with well manicured lawns and abundance of flowering plants which were in bloom many months of the year.

We love River Bend.  Residents say they enjoy the peace and tranquility of this wonderful town.  Here friendly folks take pride in their properties and homes where gardening is a major hobby.  In addition there is golf, tennis, swimming, boating, softball, basketball, hiking, cycling, jogging, photography, painting, quilting, bridge etc.  Pictured below are some of the facilities, homes and businesses that contribute to the quality of life in River Bend.  Our major shopping centers, post office, airport, lodging facilities and hospital, are all within a 15 minute drive.

Our government is composed of a Council of five, a Mayor and a Town Manager.  A number of volunteer Advisory Boards and Committees assist the Council.  The entrance to River Bend is adorned by a pond with a sprinkler and a church which looks over the community.   There are no politicians here and everyone has a voice in government.  The Town prides itself in one of the lowest tax rates in the State.  In addition, zoning laws strictly enforced protect property values.  The Craven Regional Medical Center, a state-of-the-art medical facility specializing in heart transplants continues to grow along with a wide variety of other medical facilities in the area.

Normally, winters in River Bend are quite mild allowing for outside activities twelve months a year.
Occasionally however we do get snow which does not last more than a day or two.  During 1987 we
experienced a blizzard. A few years later we had very cold weather which caused the canals to freeze over providing residents with a chance to do some ice skating.  I had to chop out the ice around my boat in order to prevent damage.  Pictured below are pictures of the snow left by a storm during December 2000.

January 2002 provided us with some more snow to start the new year.  Actually we have only had snow five times during the past seventeen  years.  The snow never lasts long as it is gone within a day or two due to the warming effects of the Gulf Stream.
